When you polish concrete flooring, you create a shiny, durable surface that will remain beautiful for several years to come. However, polished concrete will only remain attractive if it is properly cared for. Using the wrong tools, chemicals, and techniques can actually damage the polished concrete. Here are a few simple dos and don'ts to help you properly care for and clean your amazing polished concrete floors.

Do Use the Right Cleaning Products

During the process of polishing concrete, several products are applied to the concrete to make it less porous. However, you still need to use the correct cleaning products to prevent scratches, staining, and damage. Choose a product manufactured for use on polished concrete whenever possible. Otherwise, utilize a nonacidic product, such as ammonia, bleach, vinegar, or citrus and pine-based cleaner. Apply the cleaner according to the package directions. Use a plastic-bristled brush or a mop to clean the flooring. Always sweep the floors thoroughly before mopping.

Don't Wait to Clean Up Spills and Stains

Whenever possible, wipe up spills immediately to avoid staining. Use a microfiber or soft cloth to clean up spills. Avoid using any abrasive sponges, as these could accidentally scratch the polished concrete. If there is a stain, use an approved cleaning product immediately. Unfortunately, if the product is acidic and is left on the polished concrete for too long, you may experience more severe staining. If you have an issue removing the stain with commercially available products, contact a professional immediately to have the stains removed or have that section of the flooring polished.

Do Carefully Clean the Flooring in Sections

If you have a large surface to clean, it can be tricky to get the entire floor cleaned before the liquid cleaning product dries completely. When the cleaning product dries, it can leave behind a film and streaks. To avoid this, divide the flooring into sections and clean each section one at a time. This will ensure the entire floor looks shiny and beautiful.

Your polished concrete floor will remain bright, shiny, and elegant for several years. If you begin to notice scratches, staining, or the floor just doesn't have the same glow, it is time to contact a professional again to have the concrete polished.
